I know what you’re thinking. I’m probably involved in an essential oil MLM and I’m trying to get you to buy. Quite the opposite. It’s a funny stereotype though. But I promise I’m not a stay-at-home mom with an oil business. I’m not a mom nor do I have an oil business. I have this blog!
But anyway. While I do believe essential oils have their place, I’m not here to tell you that they’ll cure cancer. And just for full disclosure, I am vaccinated against covid 19. So going into this I want to preface that modern medicine does have its place.
I think plant medicine gets a bad rep, especially in Christian circles. We don’t trust CBD oil or medicinal marijuana and we think plant medicine is “witchy” or evil. And I get it. A lot of herbal tinctures are perceived as potions and rituals. But I don’t think that’s what plant medicine is.
Sure, plant medicine has many different histories and roots. But just as with everything I believe in intention. Yoga is an integral part of my day for dealing with my chronic illness. Lots of people would say yoga is an evil practice. But God knows my intention is to feel better physically. And I think the same goes for plant medicine or literally anything else you can think of. Anything could be used or done for wrong if that is your intent.
But plant medicine has been around since quite literally the beginning of time. It’s all throughout the bible.
Here are some examples:
And on the banks, on both sides of the river, there will grow all kinds of trees for food. Their leaves will not wither, nor their fruit fail, but they will bear fresh fruit every month because the water for them flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for healing. – Ezekiel 47:12
Now Isaiah had said, “Let them take a cake of figs and apply it to the boil, that he may recover.” – Isaiah 38:21
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. – Psalm 51:7
Plants have medicinal properties because God designed them that way. Why wouldn’t we want to use them? Making tinctures, growing herbs and foraging plants brings me closer to the Lord.
I make the majority of my own products from household cleaners which are safer than store-bought, chemical-filled ones and skincare products. These items contain oils, herbs, and essentials oils that were used in the bible. And when it comes to managing my chronic pain, I first turn to supplements instead of antibiotics.
But as I said at the beginning of the post, I understand that antibiotics have their place and I know the wisdom for medicine comes from the Lord. I’m just speaking from my own experience and what works for me.
I encourage you Christians, to take part in plant medicine. It has many benefits and is a gift from God. As always, tread carefully. A lot of plat medicine teachings teach us to honour creation instead of the Creator. Be mindful where you put your intention and honour the Lord with your works.
