Since my doctor told me to reduce or rather eliminate the chemicals and toxins from my life I’ve needed to replace everything. And I mean everything. Some things I didn’t even think of right away…like bug spray. But summer came creeping up and living here in the prairie, bug spray is essential.
But finding natural and holistic versions of otherwise chemically laden items can really add up. So I decided to try my hand at my own DIY bug spray. I’ve been using this spray for 5 years now and it’s worked wonderfully! It’s also a fraction of the price to make yourself and totally safe for use on yourself and children if you have them!

Equipment you’ll need:
Ingredients:
- 2 oz witch hazel
- 10 drop tea tree essential oil
- 10 drops lemongrass essential oil
- 8 drops peppermint essential oil
- 8 drops eucalyptus essential oil
The method:
- Using your funnel pour the witch hazel into the spray bottle
- Add in your essential oils and you’re done!
- Spray over exposed skin before going outside
This DIY bug spray works like a charm and comes at a fraction of the price compared to store-bought non-toxic bug sprays. The essential oils work well together as a natural deterrent for bugs but aren’t sticky or uncomfortable to reapply throughout the day.
Looking back I’ve had more success with this DIY bug spray keeping bugs away than I have with the traditional bug sprays I’ve used throughout my life. And now I don’t have a coughing fit every time I apply the bug spray.
