A lot of us suffer from things like seasonal depression, seasonal affective disorder or just simply the winter blues. In the winter months, there’s a lot less sunlight out which can cause us to lack vitamin D. It’s also just not fun when it’s still dark when you wake up and dark by the time you’re eating dinner.
But this is something most people see the effect of. If you’re tired f feeling gloomy in the winter, here are a few tips on how to beat the winter blues!

How to beat the winter blues:
1. Get as much sunlight as possible
This is always a little tricky especially up here in Manitoba when sometimes the sun doesn’t shine for days in the winter. But when it does shine, soak it in. Get outside if it’s not too cold or sit by a sunny window. In fact, just keeping the blinds open in the dead of winter can help.
But if you’re still struggling to get enough sunlight, I can’t recommend a SAD (seasonal affective disorder) lamp enough. It creates that mock sunshine we’re all missing in the winter days. Using this lamp in the winter has done wonders for my mood and overall health. I try to use it daily in the winter for about 15-20 minutes.
2. Move your body
It’s so much easier to get your body moving and exercise when it’s warm outside. But moving your body in the winter is just as if not even more important. It doesn’t have to be an intense workout either, but moving helps boost serotonin which does wonders for your mood.
3. Eat seasonally
I don’t know what it is about eating seasonally but it works so well to connect us with the seasons. It’s also a lot more sustainable too. In general, eating healthier is a mood booster as well. And it doesn’t hurt to eat more cutrus fruits and foodhigh in vitamin C and D!
4. Get lots of sleep
If it’s going to be this dark out all the time, you might as well lean into it! Maintaining a good sleep schedule throughout the winter months is crucial for our health and mental health.
5. Do something you love
Finding something you love and that excites you is a surefire way to help you beat the winter blues. When you’re doing something you love it doesn’t matter how cold it is or how dark it is outside.
