For the past couple of years, I have been striving for a simple, slow life. But life has repeatedly thrown curveballs and offered reason to not slow down. Such as a global pandemic and getting married…in a global pandemic.
While we can’t control a lot of things in life, we can make a lot of steps to simplify our lives. And that’s just what I intend to do and focus on this year. And you can too!
How to simplify your life:
When you think of living a simple life you may be tempted to think somewhere along the lines of the little house on the prairie. And while your life can look like that, it doesn’t have to. You can live a simple life in an apartment or an acreage.
Though a lot of the ideals may seem old-fashioned, they’re really more sustainable and simple. And help to cultivate a slow, simple and less rushed life. All things that benefit you. Here are a few ways t simply your life:
1. Accumulate less stuff
Having a lot of things doesn’t exactly scream “Simple!”. And while simplifying your life doesn’t mean you have to be a minimalist, but having less stuff does help. Having a clutter-free home helps to have a clutter-free mind.
2. Learn how to make bread and other baked goods
Learning how to make basic recipes is a skill I think everyone should have. Taking the time to make something with simple ingredients really helps you to slow down and embrace the simple things in life.
3. Take a break from screens regularly
The world is messy, friends. It’s hard to live a simplified life when your mind is so full of the stuff going on in the world. Taking a break is a necessity, I’ve found to help embrace that simplicity I want in life.

4. Spend 15-20 minutes cleaning daily
This all comes back to the idea of having a simple home = a simple life. Taking time to do a little cleaning every day helps to keep the mess at bay and helps keep the stress down.

5. Live seasonally
Seasonally living is one of my favourite ways to live more slowly and simply. Seasonal living is basically living in tune with the seasons. Doing seasonal activities, embracing seasonal weather and eating seasonal foods. When we live with what the seasons have to offer, we’re in less of a rush and can live more in the moment.
6. Create routines
Routines are essential to living a more slowed-down life. It helps us to prioritize the things we want and need to get done and ensures we have enough time to do these things. Again, leading to a less rushed, more simple life.
7. Learn how to say no
There’s nothing simple about a busy schedule and over-booking yourself. Learning how to set boundaries and to say no when you need to are so so important. Not just for simple living but for everyone, I think! When we stretch ourselves too thin we lose a bit of ourselves.
8. Make your home your favourite place
Making your home a sanctuary has so many benefits. Actually wanting to be at home will help you save money and give you a sense of peace.
9. Pick a screen-free hobby
Taking up a screen-free hobby will help with screen breaks but will also help stimulate your mind in other ways. Try painting, knitting, or pottery! Creating things with your hands can be so enriching.
10. Spend more time in nature
When we’re caught up in the hustle of life we often neglect to spend time in the outdoors. But connecting to nature really helps to put things into perspective.
