There are a lot of clean and non-toxic makeup brands on the market. Or at least a lot of brands that market themselves that way. In a sea of heavily marketing “green” “clean” and “non toxic” makeup brands, how can you even know where to start or who to trust? Every day it feels like a new product hits the scene that’s too good to be true.
Here’s the best way you can tell if a brand’s claims are true:
Look for third-party certifications. These can include things like Leaping Bunny Certified Cruelty Free, EWG Certified, Made Safe, USDA Certified Biobased Product, Think Dirty, etc.
A third-party certification means that the brand/product has been thoroughly vetted by someone not involved in the company and is therefore unbiased.

Merit Beauty offers a minimalistic approach to clean beauty by creating products that are body, skin and the planet. One of my favourite things about Merit Beauty is that you can find a breakdown of each product’s ingredients on their site. They’ve also added common skincare ingredients to their makeup products to keep your skin glowing.
I’m a huge fan of their product’s pigment and how easy they are to apply. They’re also EU and Clean at Sephora compliant. You can shop Merit Beauty here to see for yourself. Plus if you’re a first-time customer, you’ll receive the cutest makeup bag with your order!

The original zero waste, multi-use crayon. Axiology may have a small lineup but their products including the multi-stick and lid-to-lip balmies offer so much use. Use the crayons eyeshadow, blush, color, highlight and lip color for a full face using a few products. Their products are also cruelty-free, vegan, and plastic-free!

Saie Beauty is one of my favourite clean and non toxic beauty brands. Their slip tint tinted moisturizer has been my go-to for over a year now, it’s just so good!
Saie has an impressive line of products as well as an impressive list of third-party certifications including 1% for the planet, Climate-neutral certified, and Leaping Bunny Certified.

Kosas is “makeup for skincare freaks” and is clinically proven to make your skin better over time. Their products are clean and cruelty free and feel like you’re wearing a second skin, not cakey makeup.
They’re formulated without Talc, Parabens, Aluminum, Silicone and so many more harmful ingredients often found in traditional makeup products.

Ilia is another makeup brand that is focused on skincare. Notice a pattern? Good, clean makeup puts your skin first and doesn’t use harsh ingredients to further pollute your skin. Ilia is no different. They’re a part of 1% for the planet, Leaping Bunny certified and use recycled materials in their products.
