Growing up I always thought something was wrong with me. Everybody loved bath and body works and all the seasonal scented candles. And though I bought some and tried, they always made me sick to my stomach. I just assumed I was never going to be a candle person.
And that idea made me sad. Because what’s cozier than a dimly lit room and a flickering candle? It was until I made the switch to toxin-free living that I realized it wasn’t that I wasn’t a candle person, It was that I wasn’t a chemical person.
As it turns out, I’m not alone. Lots of people experience the side effects of scented candles without even realizing it. Some side effects can include things like headaches, migraines, nausea, allergies, and respiratory problems like asthma. That’s definitely not cozy.
What makes a candle toxic? A combination of everything. From cheap paraffin wax to artificial scents made up of chemicals. It’s a terrible combination. When looking for a safe candle look for it to be made from soy, coconut or beeswax. Or a combination! To avoid artificial fragrances look for ingredients like essential oils and botanicals.
