It’s come to my attention recently that a few popular period underwear brands have been shown to contain PFAs. PFAs are harmful, “forever chemicals” that don’t break down in the landfill and have been known to store in the body. While they’re commonly found in water, this recent discovery is especially concerning as we keep these products next to our most intimate parts for prolonged periods of time.

Why are PFAs dangerous?
And more so, we’ve been led to believe that they are safe, eco-friendly period solutions. These new reports state otherwise. If you have been following me here on the blog, on my Youtube or on my Instagram then you will know that I have worked with Thinx period underwear before. I had a 2-year long partnership with them, I encouraged my followers to buy them because I truly believed them to be the best, most sustainable solution. Heck, they were all I used for almost 3 years!
But Thinx, Knix and Ruby love are all (or were) involved in lawsuits over the amount of PFAs that were found in their period underwear. While all brands have denied this time and time again, we simply cannot trust this. All of these brands have been 3rd party tested and shown to contain mass amounts of the chemical. So much so that it would be impossible for the brands to formulate their underwear without knowing they contained them.
The exact side effects of PFAs are unknown but it has been highly suspected to cause issues like
- Reproductive issues in women
- Developmental delays in children
- Some cancers like prostate, kidney, testicular
- Hormone imbalances
- Increased risk of cholesterol
I’ve compiled a list of PFA-free period underwear to recommend to you moving forward. All of these brands have been 3rd party tested and found to contain NO PFAs at all. A much safer option.

PFA Free Period Underwear
This period underwear company simply called “Period” has been independently lab tested and found to contain zero PFAs. They’re also one of the most affordable period underwear options starting at just $12 a pair. They’re made out of certified organic cotton and don’t contain any antimicrobial chemicals. They’re also one of the most size-inclusive options with sizes up to 6XL
ModiBodi is another great option made from bamboo! They’ve also been independently lab tested and found to contain zero PFAs. Their size range also goes up to 6XL.
In the independent lab study, Aisle was found to contain…you guessed it! Zero PFAs. They offer up to size 5XL, contain no antimicrobial chemicals and have styles made from organic cotton.
While the inner layer is made from polyester, no traceable amounts of PFAs have been found in their underwear. Their sizes range up to XXL.
While some of the brands that we’ve known and love may contain these harmful chemicals, there are some truly good, PFA-free period underwear brands! There are truly good companies with good intentions. Sometimes we have to look a little deeper, but they’re there.
I hope this list gave you some PFA-free period underwear brands that you can check out and trust! I still stand by period underwear is one of the best sustainable solutions for period care.

Thank you for the info! I was so nervous before getting down the list because I had just ordered some Bambody underwear a few days ago, but I’m relieved to see they made the cut! This will be my first cycle with period underwear (I’ve been dealing with ill-fitting menstrual cups for years now, and now that my last one has bit the dust, I wanted to try an alternative), so I’m really hopeful they work out!
Thanks again, I’m really enjoying everything I’ve seen of your blog so far! 🙂
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you found Bambody! While I haven’t personally tried them, I’m still a huge fan of period underwear and have heard nothing but amazing things! You’ll have to let me know what you think of them!
What about Boody brand?
I haven’t looked into their period underwear very much but I love the rest of the brand and trust them.
