Sustainable fashion is such a hot topic right now and I’m over the moon about it! It’s nice to see consumers and brands alike making strides towards more eco-friendly purchases and products.
But I also know that the topic can see overwhelming and daunting at first glance and you’re probably thinking “There’s no way I could know enough to even shop sustainably!”
Well that’s just not true. And I’m here to tell you thank shopping sustainably is so much easier than you think!
Here are 6 things to keep in mind to make shopping sustainably easier:
1. You don’t have to be an expert. –
There’s no way one person can know absolutely everything about a single topic. Not even me. π And you don’t have to know it all. You don’t have to in order to shop sustainably. So relax. It’s a process and learning experience.
2. There is power in your purchase. –
That’s right. Your dollars count for something. What you choose to spend your money on sends a message to brands on what kind of quality you expect.
3. Boycotting isn’t as effective as you think. –
I know one of my tips when starting to exclusively shop for slow fashion is to quit going to malls and shopping in unethical stores. I think that is very beneficial to you but not necessarily for the brands/store in question. Instead you could use your power for good and urge your favorite brands to clean up their act.
4. Do your research. –
While we can’t know everything it’s still important to be educated and aware. Be aware of what materials brands use, what their factories look like etc. Not every brand is perfect but there are brands that are making strides and it’s important to encourage these brands while still making the best educated purchase.
5. Buy second hand. –
Buying second hand is a fantastic and easy way to shop sustainably since it’s easily accessible and very affordable.

6. You don’t need to be perfect.-
I can’t stress this enough. Shopping sustainably isn’t a one size fits all scenario. There is no clear right from wrong with brands at all differing levels of sustainability. We’re bound to make mistakes or buy something “unethical” from time to time. You can’t sit and beat yourself up about it.
Always strive to be better, smarter, but never perfect. Stressing about it will only make you miserable and I believe that fashion should be fun!
And there you have it! See, shopping sustainably doesn’t have to be hard. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It can be as easy as 1, 2, 3…4, 5, 6. π
Just remember to relax and have fun with it!
