I wrote a post a few weeks back about all the things I still buy in plastic, and you all seemed to really like it! The point of the post was to point out that as much as we try, we can’t always be 100% waste-free.
The world is filled with plastic and some times the things we need still come in plastic.
But today I wanted to write a follow-up post and share a few of the things that I no longer buy in plastic.
As I said, some times plastic can be unavoidable. So I’ve really taken my time to find alternatives for these daily things in order to cut out as much plastic as possible.
Here are 11 things I no longer buy in plastic:
1. Water Bottles – I’ve discussed this time after time on my blog but I just don’t purchase plastic water bottles anymore. In fact, I refuse them and won’t drink out of them in general. I prefer my reusable bottle and it saves a lot of money in the long run.
I recognize that not every place in the world has access to clean drinking water and so plastic bottles are a necessity. I’m just saying I personally do not purchase plastic water bottles and if you’re able too, you should also cut them out!
2. Fruits and veggies – I no longer buy precut fruits and veggies, premade salad mixes or any fruit or veg that is wrapped in plastic. I opt for their bulk versions. And I either don’t use produce bags or use reusable ones to avoid the little plastic baggies that the stores have.
3. Shampoo – I switched to a shampoo bar a few months ago and I am never going back to bottled shampoo again!

4. Cleaners – I’ve started making all of my own household cleaners from laundry detergent to all-purpose cleaner and everything in between. This helps cut back the need for cleaners in plastic bottles.

5. Spices – In the summertime I grow a lot of my own herbs and spices and keep them in mason jars for when they’re not growing. (I’m hoping to start growing them indoors soon too!) When I need a spice I don’t have a purchase it in glass containers that I can upcycle instead of in plastic baggies.
6. Peanut butter – This may seem like such a random addition but what can I say, I love peanut butter! I opt to buy it in glass jars that again, can be reused.
7. Toothpaste – My newest favorite zero waste swap is toothpaste tablets! They come in a glass jar which is just awesome!
8. Food in plastic – I try to avoid processed foods as much as I can. (Though I still have the occasional treat.) But I try to be really smart about the packaging my foods come in. Like buying noodles in a cardboard box that can be recycled vs a plastic bag.
I always try to find my favorite foods in glass, tin or cardboard before purchasing it in plastic as all these things can be recycled.
9. Coffee pods – I have a whole post about my zero waste coffee routine here. But my family still owns a Keurig and so we reusable pods with coffee grounds instead of plastic, single-use pods.
10. Soap – I can’t believe it took me soap long to switch to bar soap. It’s the best and package free. For hand soap, I make my own!
11. To-Go drinks – I make the majority of my drinks at home because I like to save money but when I do get drinks on the go, I bring my own cup! Most coffee shops give you a discount for bringing your own too!
These are just 11 of the things I no longer buy in plastic! In the future when I have my own house I plan to expand this list exponentially!
