I’m not trying to brag, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been complimented on an outfit, asked where it’s from and had to disappoint someone by telling them it’s thrifted. And I usually get the same response: a light-hearted rolling of the eyes and an “of course”. My friends are always puzzled by how I manage to find such cute things t the thrift store so I thought I’d share all my secrets right here and now.
I’ve really been thrifting my whole life. Growing up it was out of necessity because we didn’t have a ton of money. It was actually something my grandma and I used to do a lot before she passed. And although I had always thrifted because it was what I could afford, I learned about the impact that fashion has on our planet and how thrifting can play a role in sustainability. Now, let’s get into it.

Thrifting Tips to Help you Score Big:
1. Keep a list (or Pinterest board) of specific styles and pieces you’re looking for
I find no shopping trip is truly successful when I don’t go in with a list. I’m more likely to overconsume and buy things I won’t really wear just because I think it’s cute in the moment. You can be specific with your like “plain white t-shirt” or “denim shorts” or just go for a more general vibe like “long, flowy dress” or “floral pieces”. As long as you have something in mind that you can keep an eye out for it’ll help you be more likely to actually secure those items.
2. Don’t sift through every piece
Trying to look at everything in a thrift store is exhausting. It’s more efficient to scan the aisles for colors and textures you’re looking for.
3. Sign up for email lists/rewards programs
Most thrift stores have some kind of rewards program and they’re usually worth signing up for. These can allow you to earn points when you shop which turn into coupons, offer discounts and exclusive offers. Valu Village is one of my favourite programs to be a part of as they offer special birthday discounts every year which is so fun!
4. Find out which days are restock days
A lot of thrift stores have one or a few days a week where they typically put out new merchandise. Knowing when this happens can help you to scoop up the best stuff before it gets sold.
5. Check hidden places for items
What I mean is that a lot of people will stash away really good finds to come back for later. And most of them just don’t come back at all. I’ll never forget the day I found a brand new pair of Keds (in my size!!) hidden in the toy section. This does require more effort, and you’re not guaranteed to find anything, but it can be a fun treasure hunt and you never know what you could find!
